In answer to your question, I think adults have always zeroed in on the “new thing” teens are enjoying, and then demonize it. If you look at any generation of teens, you’ll see the trend. There’s a term for it: ephebiphobia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephebiphobia The fear and loathing of kids, especially teens. So the headlines blaming anxiety on teens’ tech use is just one more iteration of this trend, of this fear.

But I do think our society is, in general (with notable exceptions, haha), becoming more empathetic, more tuned in to understanding where others are coming from, rather than pointing fingers and demanding others change. By the time today’s teens are adults, maybe America’s attitude toward others will be more like that in the Netherlands: a true live-and-let-live kind of ‘tude.
